The City of Wolverhampton Council is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for its residents through innovative and effective public services. Towards the end of last year, the council took a significant step forward in enhancing its flood management program through the installation of 87 gully sensors into the city’s drainage network. These sensors were strategically placed within gullies in areas known to be residential flooding hotspots, with the primary goal of gaining deeper insights into the city’s drainage assets and strengthening its flood mitigation program.
This deployment was a resounding success, delivering valuable, real-time data on water levels and gully blockages. By continuously receiving and analysing live data, the council can now manage the drainage system with improved efficiency, with faster response times to potential flood risks. The information provided by the sensors enables timely interventions, allowing crews to clear blockages and prevent flooding before it occurs, which in turn reduces the likelihood of property damage, disruption to daily life, and long-term infrastructure deterioration.
The success of this initial deployment has paved the way for further expansion, with additional monitors being deployed at the beginning of this year. The success of this implementation highlights the importance of local authorities investing in advanced technology to enhance flood defences, and how by doing so, they can better protect communities from the increasing risks of flooding.
