National Apprenticeship Week is the perfect time to highlight how the LCRIG Innovation & Learning Festival 2026 is investing in the future of highways and road infrastructure technology, and the opportunities for apprentices to get involved.
Taking place on 24-25 June 2026 at NAEC Stoneleigh, the festival will put a special focus on supporting, engaging, and celebrating apprentices from across the sector.
At LCRIG, we are committed to addressing the skills gap by creating meaningful opportunities for learning and development. That’s why apprentices are firmly at the heart of the festival, supported by a range of dedicated initiatives.
Fully Funded Places for Apprentices
We are committed to making this event accessible, which is why fully funded places are available for both public and private sector apprentices, covering accommodation, transport to and from the hotel to the venue, catering and refreshments.
In 2025, 61 apprentices attended through the fully funded places, and in 2026 we’re aiming to welcome even more, allowing apprentices to access learning and networking opportunities they may not otherwise be able to experience.
Industry Relevant Training and CPD
Apprentices will benefit from a comprehensive programme of CPD-accredited technical sessions, covering the latest innovations and best practice in highways and road infrastructure technology.
Previous sessions have explored topics such as AI-enabled road condition monitoring, connected vehicle data, advanced radar systems, in-situ recycled repairs, UAV drone mapping and sustainable asphalt solutions. The 2026 programme will continue to build on this foundation, introducing apprentices to new and emerging technologies.
Innovation in Action: Live Demonstrations
The festival’s live demonstration areas and outdoor exhibition provide hands-on exposure to cutting-edge solutions being used across the sector.
In 2025, demonstrations ranged from UV road marking to collaborative connected technology showcases featuring drones, autonomous buses, remote traffic signals and digital incursion warning systems. Even more live innovation is planned for 2026.
Connecting with the Sector
Beyond technical learning, the festival offers apprentices valuable opportunities to engage directly with the sector through workshops, panel discussions and networking sessions. These interactive sessions support confidence-building and professional relationship development with employers, local authorities and industry leaders.
Celebrating Apprentices: DfT Special Recognition Apprentice Awards
The DfT Special Recognition Apprentice Awards return in 2026, shining a spotlight on apprentices who are making an impactful contribution to the sector.
Award categories include:
- Inspirational Apprentice Award
- Exceptional Frontline Apprentice Award
- Outstanding Achievement Awards (Level 2, Level 3, and Level 4-6)
These awards will be presented on the evening of 24 June, ahead of the festival networking event.

Future of Local Roads: Apprentice Innovation Competition
Apprentices are also invited to enter this year’s competition which challenges participants to develop creative solutions to real-world highways or transport issues in their local area.
Submissions may focus on anything from smarter road maintenance, greener transport options, improved accessibility, better data use, or community engagement. The winner will receive recognition, exposure through LCRIG platforms and a cash prize! Find out more and enter.
