Following strong interest and a number of requests for additional time, the deadline for the Future of Local Roads: Apprentice Innovation Competition has been extended by one month. Entries now close: 5pm on Friday 1st May 2026
The competition challenges apprentices to identify a highways or transport-related issue in their local area and develop an innovative solution which could improve safety, efficiency, accessibility or sustainability on our local networks.

By taking part, apprentices have the opportunity to:
- Win a £1,000 cash prize – a valuable reward that recognises their innovation and effort
- Gain sector-wide recognition and stand out as a forward-thinking apprentice
- Showcase their ideas to industry leaders who are shaping the future of highways and road infrastructure technology.
- Have their concept featured across LCRIG platforms, giving their work valuable exposure across the sector

If you’ve been considering entering, or know an apprentice with a brilliant idea, this extended deadline offers valuable time to develop and refine submissions.
Entries could include anything from smarter road maintenance, greener transport options, improved accessibility, better data use, or community engagement.

Building on Last Year’s Success
Last year’s competition highlighted the level of creativity and insight coming through from apprentices across the sector.
The 2025 winner, Leanna Dinnegan, developed HATT (Highways and Transport Technology) in a Box, an outreach initiative designed to engage schools and communities and inspire future careers in the industry.
Reflecting on her experience, Leanna said:
“Winning the competition felt incredibly rewarding. It’s not just about recognition, it felt like a moment that validated the importance of investing in young people and promoting careers in highways and transport. As someone who started their journey as an apprentice, I know firsthand how impactful early outreach and support can be. To now be recognised for trying to offer that same support to the next generation is a full-circle moment I’m so proud of.”
Awards Evening
The competition winner will be announced on 24 June 2026 at the DfT Special Recognition Apprentice Awards, which form part of the LCRIG Innovation & Learning Festival 2026. Held at NAEC Stoneleigh from 24-25 June, the event brings together industry leaders, local authorities, and innovators for a relaxed and celebratory evening recognising the next generation of talent.
