Liverpool City Council’s BioAsphalt Trial with Gautam ZEN UK Delivers Promising Results After First Year

Following the completion of its first year, Gautam ZEN UK, a specialist in sustainable and renewable supply solutions, has released a review of its Lignin-Modified BioAsphalt project at Glenville Close, Woolton in Liverpool. The road, which has now been in service for 14 months, forms part of a collaborative effort to reduce carbon emissions from road construction and maintenance.

The project was delivered in partnership with Liverpool City Council, local civil engineering company, Dowhigh Ltd, and CEMEX UK.

Key findings have shown that 15% of traditional bitumen was successfully replaced with BioBinder Kraft Lignin, significantly lowering carbon emissions while maintaining performance excellence.

CEMEX UK supplied an SMA-grade asphalt blend incorporating BioBinder Kraft Lignin, a renewable, bio-based alternative to oil-based bitumen. Typically, CEMEX products rely on conventional bitumen, with a high carbon footprint. However, the substitution with BioBinder not only reduces emissions but also allows for warm-mix asphalt production at temperatures (135–145°C), further enhancing environmental benefits.

Additionally, the use of lignin, naturally derived from plant matter, acts as a carbon sink, locking carbon into the asphalt itself and contributing to net positive emissions savings.

The pilot took place at a Liverpool City Council site, providing valuable real-world insights into the potential of lignin-modified materials for future road projects.

Ray Sandip, CEO of Gautam ZEN UK, commented:

“This project reflects the perfect synergy between innovation and sustainability, reinforcing the promise of sustainable solutions in modern infrastructure. A huge thank you to Dowhigh Ltd, Liverpool City Council, our partners and stakeholders for making this milestone possible.”
