On Tuesday 15th April, LCRIG’s Relationship Manager, Keely Metcalfe, took part in a Grading Day for Primary Engineer’s nationwide ‘If you were an engineer, what would you do?’ competition.
Hosted by Siemens Energy in Newcastle, the event brought together volunteers from across the North East to judge entries submitted by primary school pupils. LCRIG joined the judging panel as part of our ongoing partnership with Primary Engineer, supporting efforts to inspire the next generation of engineers.
With over 75,000 entries received this year, the competition challenges pupils to identify real-world problems and design innovative engineering solutions. From sketched prototypes to imaginative concepts, every submission reflected the imagination, creativity and curiosity of young minds.
About the Grading Day
Each entry is carefully reviewed by engineering professionals and graded as pass, merit, distinction, or distinction shortlisted.
Reflecting on the experience, Keely said:
“It was a fantastic day and amazing to see the quality and thought behind the entries – from detailed diagrams to heartfelt covering letters. Themes ranged from tackling environmental issues, to household-helper robots!”
“I was especially struck by how many pupils created inventions to support family members facing challenges – their thoughtfulness, empathy and creativity were truly inspiring.”
“The range of ideas was incredible, and it would be great to see some highways-related entries in the future! I’d absolutely recommend getting involved – it’s a lot of fun and a brilliant way to help inspire the next generation of budding engineers, maybe even a future highways innovator!”
