The first in a new series of webinars hosted by the LCRIG AI Task Group, a recently established, collaborative platform dedicated to exploring artificial intelligence (AI) across the highways and transport technology sector.
The webinar was open to all LCRIG members, from those interested in understanding more about AI and its potential to enhance existing services and provide new solutions, to experts in the field who can share their experiences of real-world applications, and everywhere in between! The Task Group aims to foster knowledge sharing and support organisations as they navigate the opportunities and challenges posed by emerging AI technologies.
In last year’s Innovation Survey, AI was identified as the primary emerging area of interest across the highways sector. More recently, our members reinforced this view in a follow-up survey, identifying AI as the most critical area for LCRIG to focus on. In response, we created the AI Task Group to serve as a collaborative, knowledge-sharing and learning forum, helping members explore the rapidly emerging influence of AI through a series of themed webinars and events over the next 2 years.
The webinar series started with the question “what is AI?”, and will go on to explore its various applications and potential benefits for the highways and transport sector.

About the Webinar
The “Introduction to AI” webinar set the stage from which the LCRIG AI Task Group will set out to collaboratively explore AI in its various forms and applications over the next 2 years. It covered:
- A high-level overview of where and how AI is becoming increasingly relevant to highways services.
- Insight into the potential benefits of AI tools, including improved efficiency, smarter asset management, and enhanced decision-making.
- A discussion around common challenges and barriers to adoption.
- An open, collaborative forum for members to share experiences, ask questions, and learn from one another.
The webinar was open to:
- Local Authority members considering or using AI solutions.
- Supplier members providing AI solutions.
- Any LCRIG members interested in understanding more about AI and how it can potentially enhance existing services and provide new solutions.
