Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the transport technology and highways sector through the development of new tools and operations that work to improve the transport landscape. However, levels of adoption vary widely across the sector. Some see it as the key to efficiency and progress, while others remain cautious, balancing the risk, reliability, and ethics around AI.
Predictive AI in traffic signals is working to relieve congestion and better facilitate movement across the network through smarter signals which anticipate traffic patterns and adjust to real-time scenarios. In road maintenance, predictive AI is gaining traction as it is able to create synthetic datasets to create predictive models, streamlining maintenance operations. However, as an emerging technology, there are still bumps which need smoothing over, including issues around accuracy and data protection, among others.
In our Innovation Survey (2024), AI was highlighted as the predominant emerging technology by 83% of supply chain and local authority respondents. This got us in the LCRIG Sector Insights team wondering how our members approach AI related innovation and how receptive they are to its potential benefits.
