Loughborough University invites you to take part in a short survey to determine stakeholder issues, needs and requirements for adopting softer surfaces on suitable roadways and footways.
Every year, more than 200,000 people in the UK need medical assistance after falling outside, most commonly on hard-surfaced footpaths, kerbs and streets, costing the UK economy more than £2 billion. Additionally, hard road footways adversely impact almost every cyclist/pedestrian traffic death/serious injury (10,000 annually in the UK). But what if specifically targeted footways were surfaced with a softer surface, rather than the (hard) asphalt, paving, brick or concrete surfaces used currently, just as they have been for children’s playgrounds?
New surfaces aims to reduce injuries to Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) and encourage active travel by demonstrating the effectiveness of applying softer surfaces to targeted sections of the roadway and/or footway network.
The initial stage of the project is to determine stakeholder issues, needs and requirements for adopting softer surfaces on suitable roadways and footways through a short survey.
The survey is anonymous, though contacts details will be collected from anyone wishing to contribute to a second interview stage. It should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete.
