LCRIG Associate Member, DSD Construction, a leading Cumbrian construction company specializing in highways and associated civils infrastructure, is thrilled to announce the pioneering introduction of its Wellbeing Machine in aid of mental health charities as part of its social impact programme.
Highways paving supports wellbeing
As part of its social impact programme, DSD Construction has dedicated one of its paving machines to raising funds for mental health charities. The Company will donate between £0.25 and £0.50 to mental health charities for each Tonne of surfacing material laid with the machine.
The Wellbeing Machine, with its unmistakable lime green livery, will be deployed immediately on contracts for National Highways, Northumberland County Council, Cumberland Council and Sellafield Ltd.
Mental health support
DSD Construction recognises mental health is a critical aspect of overall well-being that impacts individuals in all walks of life, including those working in the construction industry. The construction industry is known for its demanding and challenging nature, characterized by long hours, physical labour, high-pressure deadlines, and a potentially hazardous working environment. These factors can contribute to significant stress levels and negatively affect mental health if not addressed appropriately. By prioritising mental health, construction companies can create healthier, safer, and more productive work environments for their employees.

Construction companies that invest in mental health initiatives are more likely to attract and retain talented individuals who value a positive work environment. DSD Construction is testament to that where staff retention is of the highest order, with numerous employees having supported the business over decades.
Positive Company culture
Operations Director, Martin Tweddle, said “Promoting mental health creates a supportive and caring workplace culture. When employers prioritize mental health, it demonstrates their commitment to the well-being of their employees. This, in turn, fosters job satisfaction and increases employee morale.” He added, “Companies can implement a range of strategies to support mental health, but the Wellbeing Machine was seen as pioneering in its approach.”
Managing Director, Shaun Nugent, said “The construction industry has historically had a culture that downplays mental health concerns and encourages workers to ‘tough it out.’ However, by openly discussing and addressing mental health, companies can help reduce the stigma surrounding it. Raising awareness about mental health conditions and encouraging open conversations allows workers to seek support without fear of judgment or discrimination. Our Wellbeing Machine aims to meet these challenges head on!”
