Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) was originally developed in Germany in the 1970’s and adapted to existing UK specifications in the 1990’s. However, first generation UK SMA surfaces had variable durability. This webinar explored the reasons for this and how subsequent development of appropriate specifications has improved service life and long-term performance.
Over fifteen years ago, Transport Scotland collaborated with fibre experts JRS Rettenmaier to create a second generation of SMA materials, more closely aligned with proven German best practice. This collaboration resulted in the TS2010 specification, which has since become firmly established. Our presenters will share the outcomes of this specification and its lasting legacy.
Transport Scotland was the first specifier to adopt a performance based specification for SMA in the UK. With over fifteen years’ experience in managing a network utilising this material, they bring unique insights and experience into the long-term performance of second generation SMA’s.
Rettenmaier UK also played a key role, supporting Transport Scotland on its original study tour of German SMA technology. Today, JRS VIATOP® premium fibres are used globally in the production of these materials, backed by decades of technical expertise and a history of collaboration with asphalt producers and specifiers.
