Low-Carbon Vehicle Restraint System Sets New Standard on M20 Junction 5 Scheme

Hill & Smith VRS (soon to be Brackmore Ltd) has successfully delivered a permanent low-carbon vehicle restraint system (VRS) for the M20 Junction 5 improvement scheme in Kent, demonstrating how sustainable materials and manufacturing can help reduce the carbon footprint of major highways infrastructure.

Delivered in partnership with Littlewoods Group, the project supported National Highways’ sustainability ambitions by using bluemint® recycled steel alongside manufacturing powered by renewable energy. The approach achieved a verified carbon saving of 30,785kg of CO₂ while maintaining the highest standards of quality, compliance and safety.

Early collaboration between project partners ensured the low-carbon solution was integrated seamlessly into the scheme without requiring changes to standard installation methods. The project demonstrates that lower-carbon infrastructure products can be successfully adopted at scale while maintaining programme certainty and performance.

The M20 Junction 5 scheme provides a practical example of how innovation across the supply chain can help accelerate the transition to more sustainable highways construction, creating a model for future infrastructure projects seeking to reduce embodied carbon.

Commenting on the project, Alice Kennedy, Head of Sales at Hill & Smith VRS (soon to be Brackmore Ltd), said:

“We are proud to have collaborated with our customers and wider stakeholders on the M20 Junction 5 project. It was an opportunity for Hill & Smith VRS (soon to be Brackmore Ltd) to explore all low-carbon options and integrate these materials into our manufacturing cycle. Delivering quality and compliant products to the UK highways market remains our absolute priority. We are even more excited to work with low-carbon materials to further support our industry in achieving our nationwide green targets and support all our stakeholders who are on this journey with us.”
