LCRIG-led Webinar: The Future of Road Safety – AI-Powered Prediction and Prevention

Event Date: 20/01/2026

Each year, 1.35 million people die in road collisions globally (WHO). In the UK alone, 1,633 fatal road incidents and 29,537 people killed or seriously injured (KSI) were recorded in 2024 (DfT). The estimated economic cost of road collisions exceeds £55 billion, factoring in healthcare, insurance, productivity loss, and congestion impacts (DfT, RAS40001, 2024).

Local authorities play a central role in reducing this toll. Yet in many authorities, analysis of collision reports and vehicle behaviour remains manual, slow, patchy and retrospective. AI brings a fundamentally different approach.

How AI Can Help Deliver Smarter, Faster Safety Outcomes

In this LCRIG-led webinar, we discussed how AI-driven tools could help authorities understand risk earlier, direct resources more effectively and deliver better outcomes for all road users.

This session was delivered in partnership with TRL, sponsor of the upcoming edition of our AI Mini-Guide: AI in Road Safety.

Agenda

  • Welcome and insights from the LCRIG AI Mini-Guide
  • Why the AI hype now? – Chris Kettell, TRL
  • Outcomes of Devon and Cornwall trial of AI detection of distracted driving – Adrian Leisk, Devon and Cornwall Police and Geoff Collins, Acusensus
  • Collision Prediction – Can AI do this? – Subu Kamal, TRL
  • Demonstration of iMAAP AI Enabled Collision Prediction – Raj Mohan, TRL
  • Open Q&A Session

Key Topics

We showcased verified, operational deployments of AI with documented outcomes, including:

  • AI-Enhanced Collision Analysis and Reporting
