Wrekin Launches Pulse: A New Standard in Carriageway Ironwork Performance

Leading civil engineering specialist Wrekin Products has launched Pulse, a next-generation ductile iron manhole cover range engineered to deliver long-term strength, stability and resilience.

Developed through one of the most rigorous client-led testing programmes we have ever undertaken, Pulse represents a major step forward in performance for utilities, local authorities and contractors seeking dependable, whole-life value from their ironwork installations.

Pulse has been created to meet the demanding needs of modern telecoms, water and energy networks, supporting stable, long-lasting access in locations exposed to heavy trafficking and high-intensity loading. With improved bedding stability, reduced stress on chamber walls and verified environmental performance, it offers a robust, future-ready solution for critical infrastructure.

John Kiernan, Product Manager, said: “We design solutions that tackle the real challenges faced on today’s networks. Pulse delivers precisely what our customers have asked for. It brings proven stability, lower maintenance needs and verified sustainability across the range.”

At the heart of the system is an advanced inverted T-flange frame profile, designed to protect bedding mortar and the chamber structure by spreading loads evenly and preventing stress concentrations. Independent testing recorded reductions in peak bedding stress of up to 78 percent and around 13 percent less deflection compared with competing welded-frame designs.

Every large Pulse frame is cast as a single, continuous unit without welds, removing common fatigue points and improving long-term durability. Reinforced I-beam covers maintain rigidity under repeated wheel loading, helping to preserve non rock performance throughout the product’s service life.

Pulse has been validated far beyond the requirements of BS EN 124 and CD 534. Full-scale field simulations, live traffic trials and embedded stress monitoring were used to analyse in-service performance, providing clear evidence of its whole-life benefits. Supported by verified Environmental Product Declarations, the range helps asset owners make informed decisions that reduce carbon and extend maintenance intervals.

With suitability for water, telecoms and energy chambers, Pulse is already being adopted by major network operators across the UK. The range includes D400 and E600 load class options, security capable variants and an inboard padlock system for protected access. Each product is also compatible with our ScrewLift levelling system, supporting faster, safer and more precise installations.

Pulse is available with a 7-year warranty when installed using either our UniPak rapid set bedding mortar or a CD 534 compliant flowable bedding material. With proven performance, enhanced stability and lower whole-life impact, Pulse is an ideal choice for highways, resurfacing schemes, commercial developments and utility networks seeking long-term reliability.
