UK Road Patch, the exclusive import and distribution partner for Saint-Gobain Adfors in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, has announced a major milestone for its flagship product, American Road Patch (ARP). Following two years of trials and stringent testing, ARP received British Board of Agrément (BBA) approval in May 2025, fully authorising its use across the UK.
ARP forms a lasting barrier from mechanical damage and the elements, preventing water ingress and frost degeneration, thus creating a long term, if not permanent, repair (repairs established over 6 years in the USA and up to 2 years on current trials in the UK).
Saint Gobain is known globally as a leading force in the manufacture of high-performance sustainable materials for a variety of construction applications, of which ARP forms part of that group of products.
A globally patented, multi-layered self-adhesive fiberglass reinforced geotextile membrane which is embedded into the roadway to form a long-lasting seal over potholes, cracks, utility cuts, manholes and similar defects.
During the BBA approval process, ARP patches were installed and their longevity evaluated in the UK. Patches installed for over 20 months ago were recently reviewed on 5 September 2025. All installations have been proven to provide effective long-term performance and have not suffered any signs of degradation.
ARP may also be applied as a surface dressing for cracked or damaged tarmac and utility cuts. Post application, ARP has been proven to extend the life of the affected tarmac and concrete by years, preventing water ingress whist thoroughly bonding cracked and filled surfaces.
Whilst there is an initial extra cost of installing ARP in addition to the cost of a traditional pothole repair or utility cuts, the long-term savings associated with the use of ARP are significant and indisputable, to include;
- Completely eradicates the necessity for repeat repairs, (the average type 2 pothole is repaired three times per annum).
- Reduces wasted resources associated with repeat repairs to zero, allowing those resources to be applied more efficiently to the backlog of repairs.
- ARP is a product with a positive influence on the reduction of carbon emissions, as we collectively work towards a net zero attainable outcome for the industry, also helping companies’ quantity their achievement in actual net zero reductions.
- Improving road safety, reducing accidents involving personal injury and vehicle damage.
- Suitable for use on highways and footpaths. ARP fully bonds to all tarmac and concrete surfaces.
- Aesthetically, a much neater result, which after 12 months can be difficult to locate as the patch blends into the existing road surface.
- Perfect for emergency repairs to highways where a shallow fill will invariably fail within a short period of time.
- ARP is simple to apply with minimal training and does not require special vehicles or equipment.
- Has provided public works departments in the USA with an average saving of 75% in respect of repairs where ARP has been applied.
ARP is not designed to be applied as a general large scale surface dressing.
The recommended application is over traditional pothole repairs, utility cuts and alligator cracking of areas up to 4m2.
