Next month, the Innovation and Learning Festival will bring together leading technology suppliers for a collaborative, live demonstration of cutting-edge highways and transport solutions. This immersive event will showcase how connected technologies are transforming safety, efficiency, and coordination on our roads.
From Alert to Action – A Real-World Demonstration

Attendees will witness a live scenario in which a digital incursion warning system triggers a coordinated, multi-technology response involving:
- IPAWS – Digital incursion warning system by Highway Resource Solutions
- REMOS – Remote traffic signals and portable VMS system by SRL
- Autonomous buses – from Transport for West Midlands and Ohmio
- Drone deployment – by Coventry City Council
The demonstration will highlight how integrated technologies work together to enhance road safety and enable proactive decision-making.
Technology in Action
IPAWS by Highway Resource Solutions (HRS) a digital incursion warning system, initially acts as a deterrent to members of the public but ultimately provides valuable time to warn roadworkers of impending danger. Festival attendees will see firsthand how easy the system is to deploy and experience the visual and audible impact the system can have on potential threats in addition to the alarm provision to the workforce.
SRL will showcase their REMOS remotely operated signals and portable VMS, demonstrating how temporary ITS can be integrated into wider connected systems. The REMOS system provides:
- Real-time responsiveness
- Low latency operation
- Improved safety and uptime
- Enhanced operational efficiency
SRL will also present visuals from their Control Hub, offering a behind-the-scenes look at what operators experience within the remote monitoring centre. Their high-speed fibre-optic network ensures seamless data transmission with no signal loss or delay in video feeds.
In a demonstration of real-word connectivity:
- Two autonomous buses from Transport for West Midlands and Ohmio, will be travelling along a route as a vehicle enters HRS’ simulated incursion zone
- An alert from the IPAWS system will be sent to SRL’s REMOS signals and VMS units which will respond to the alert
- A message will be sent to the autonomous vehicle
- An alert will be sent to Coventry City Council’s control centre
- Drone technology will be activated to assess the situation and decisions made about the need to deploy traffic management or emergency response
Coventry City Council has been at the forefront of drone and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) innovation since hosting the world’s first urban AAM airport, Air One, in 2022. Building on their showcase at last year’s festival, the council returns with further developed drone technology to encourage wider adoption, particularly among local governments.
