As we prepare for next month’s Innovation and Learning Festival, we’re shining a spotlight on the start-ups that will be showcasing innovative solutions and breakthrough technologies for the highways maintenance and transport technology sector.
First up is AIM Group, a recent addition to the LCRIG community bringing a pioneering AI Predictive Monitoring Platform that’s preventing structure closure and reducing maintenance costs using data structures are already collecting.
Their AI delivers dynamic alerts for defects, long-term structural behaviour forecasts, and root cause analysis – telling you not just if your structure has a defect, but exactly where and why. Instead of waiting for cracks to appear, AIM spots hidden risks early, helping councils avoid costly interventions, protect public safety, and stay ahead of failure.
AIM’s journey began with a single insight beneath the concrete-hinged Ebbw Bridge – a critical link on the M4 between Wales and England. At the time, the structure was facing potential emergency closure due to advanced degradation. AIM’s system provided real-time evidence of continued safe performance, allowing the bridge to remain open and continue service to this day.
Using a structure’s pre-existing monitoring data to increase service life sparks the creation of AIM group: a UK-based SaaS company now leading the global shift towards AI predictive Structural Health Monitoring (SHM).
Founded by a team from Imperial College London and top engineering firms, AIM was built to bridge the gap between physical infrastructure and digital intelligence.
Today, AIM works with both asset owners and service providers across multiple sectors including transportation, railway, and energy infrastructure, helping them to:
- Forecast structural behaviour with up to 99% accuracy
- Detect critical defects as early as two years in advance
- Reduce maintenance costs by up to 65%
- Prevent unnecessary closure of ageing assets
