The session, titled “Optimise Winter Maintenance: IoT Weather Stations for Safer Roads,” highlighted the critical role of IoT technology in overcoming the challenges faced by winter maintenance operators and improving road safety and operational efficiency.

The Evolution of Winter Maintenance

Rennicks marked its two-year anniversary of entering the winter maintenance sector, partnering with Klimator, in the UK. This partnership, introduced at the Innovation Festival in Newark in 2022, has witnessed significant shifts within the sector. New entrants, like Rennicks, are introducing advanced IoT sensor technology supported by AI software platforms. This has led to supply chain collaboration and brought intelligent applications to the forefront of winter maintenance.

Understanding IoT Weather Stations

IoT weather stations offer a sophisticated approach to monitoring and predicting road weather conditions. Rennicks’ partner, Klimator, has spent three decades studying weather patterns, specifically focusing on road weather. This expertise enables them to predict and detect road conditions with high precision.

The goal is to ensure road safety by providing accurate weather predictions, thus preventing accidents due to bad weather or slippery roads. This technology has been successfully deployed in the Nordics and Scandinavia, and now, Rennicks has brought it to the UK market.

Case Study: Blackpool Council

Blackpool Council’s experience with Rennicks’ IoT weather stations exemplifies the technology’s impact. Previously reliant on neighbouring weather stations, Blackpool installed sensors last October, marking the end of their first winter season using this technology. The sensors collect data on air temperature, air humidity, and road temperature, offering a detailed understanding of local weather conditions.

Key findings from the data collected include significant variations in air and road temperatures across different locations within Blackpool, despite its small size. This granular data enables more precise winter maintenance operations, moving away from the traditional “once out, all out” approach. Instead, the technology guides operators on when and where to deploy resources, optimising salt usage and improving efficiency.

Benefits and Future Prospects

The session also highlighted the financial and operational benefits of IoT weather stations. For instance, in one Danish region, the technology enabled a shift from blanket gritting to targeted treatments, resulting in substantial savings. Similar results were seen in Somerset, where Milestone Infrastructure reported considerable cost savings and increased confidence in the technology, prompting further installations.

Additionally, the integration of IoT weather data with vehicle telematics systems, like BM systems in Norway, showcases the potential for even more intelligent and efficient gritting operations. Real-time data feeds enable dynamic route optimisation and precise salt spreading, enhancing road safety while reducing environmental impact and operational costs.
