Somerset Council has awarded VolkerHighways a Street Lighting Term Maintenance Contract worth £20 million. The contract will begin 1st October 2024 and continue for eight years, with a possible extension of four further years.
Responsible for more than 59,000 street lighting electrical assets, VolkerHighways will deliver planned, routine and reactive works, as well as capital schemes across the county, delivering to the highest safety and quality standards, verified through their recent award of Gold HERS Status.
As part of the contract, VolkerHighways will be undertaking a series of social value and recruitment initiatives. This includes prioritising the employment of local people and hiring apprentices throughout the duration of the contract who will train to industry standards, working alongside the business’ highly experienced team.
VolkerHighways will be working in partnership with Somerset Council to build meaningful and long-term measurable support in the local community. This includes inspiring the next generation of constructors, supporting local charities and enhancing biodiversity.
Working collaboratively with Somerset Council and their supply chain partners, VolkerHighways is committed to their journey of a carbon neutral Somerset by 2030. Where possible, they will use locally sourced materials, reduce their carbon emissions and deliver projects sustainably.
The new contract expands VolkerHighways’ presence in the South West, and neighbours their Bath & North East Somerset Council Highways and Street Lighting Contract.

“This was a robust procurement process involving potential suppliers from across the country, taking account of value for money, commitment to environmentally friendly practices and materials, and innovation in practice.”
Councillor Dixie Darch, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Environment and Climate Change, said: “We’ll be working closely with our new contractor to focus on LED installation, which is already well underway, alongside other energy and carbon-saving initiatives.”
