During a webinar hosted by IBTTA, Francisco Chenguayen, Operations Manager of the Lima Expresa Toll Road in Peru, highlighted the impact of an AI-enabled traffic monitoring system on road safety & efficiency. Developed by Valerann, a British data analytics company, the system analyses data from various sources (traffic cameras, roadside infrastructure, crowd sourced platforms and more) in real-time to swiftly detect anomalies and provide a comprehensive picture of the road traffic situation.
Key results from the deployment included:
- Month-on-month reduction in road accidents by up to 25%, with an average reduction of 15% in accidents resulting in fatalities or serious injuries since system implementation.
- Detection of over 95% of road incidents in under five minutes.
- Significant reduction in detection time, from an average of 12 minutes to just 5 minutes.
- Increase in alerts from 400-450 per week to 900-950 per week, showcasing enhanced monitoring coverage.
- Advanced incident risk prediction capabilities, enabling preventative measures and improved resource allocation.
Michael Vardi, the Chief Business Officer and co-founder of Valerann, emphasized their commitment to enhancing road safety and traffic management in partnership with Lima Expresa. He highlighted the transformative impact of their technology in revolutionizing road safety and saving lives on major roadways in Lima.
This enhanced detection capability allowed the road operator to decrease response times and implement more proactive measures to manage road accidents, including identifying pedestrians and stationary vehicles in high-risk areas, along with facilitating more precise resource allocation. The improvement is also attributed to the system’s ability to anticipate accident-prone areas, allowing for the better placement of warning signs and faster dispatch of emergency services.
