LCRIG’s ‘Practical steps on the journey to net zero’ webinar series will be brought to life at this year’s Strictly Highways event.
Launched earlier this year, the series is exploring in detail the work being done to accelerate the transition to clean energy and sustainable roads.
Both Colas and Breedon are the primary partners for this series and will have representatives participating in a panel debate entitled ‘Disrupting our way to net zero’. The session will take place on day two of Strictly Highways (6th October 2022).
With the UK reaching record temperatures of over 40C (104F) for the first time this year, the issue of climate change must be taken seriously. The highways sector must now help to move the needle on climate change and come up with new and innovative ways of doing so.
Disruptive technologies will be required to make this happen quickly and the adoption of new materials must be used on future road schemes. The industry must work together and take action to decarbonise now.
Speakers involved with this session will cover:
- What do we need to do to decarbonise?
- How is the industry monitoring climate change and what does it mean for roads?
- What impact is the weather having on maintenance?
- What are other devolved Governments doing in this area?
- How do we ensure that key technologies and techniques come to the fore as solutions?
- Taking a whole life-cycle approach to Net Zero (construction, materials, transport, etc)

A launch webinar kicked off the series in March and set out the breadth of the challenge faced with a focus on working towards solutions to help the sector reach net zero.
A second webinar took place in June and saw panellists discuss how carbon savings can be made across highway and transportation infrastructure with respect to the type of materials used.
The draft programme for Strictly Highways 2022 will be published next month (September).
