Each week our friends at the Transport Technology Forum publishes summary of data gathered from a range of local authorities across the country, providing an overview of how public behaviour is changing as a result of Coronavirus restrictions being eased. This helps in understanding whether travel habits are returning to normal or what new patterns are being experienced. Local Authorities can benefit by being able to compare what is happening in their areas with the national picture, allowing local and national comparisons to be drawn.
Latest analysis from the Transport Technology Forum suggests last week’s daytime traffic levels exceeded pre-lockdown levels for the first time. Figures collated from a range of local authorities across England indicate that afternoon peaks are now back in line with February but that, while it is increasing, morning peak traffic is still lower than it was before restrictions were introduced.
This week’s Travel and Transport Data weekly digest also reports that car, bus and coach vehicle volumes have returned to baseline while last week’s fairly good weather and the start of school holidays saw an eight percentage point increase in cycling compared to the week before.
As always, the report also picks out examples of initiatives from local authorities including some ideas on how to make active travel changes seen during the Covid-19 crisis permanent, a new data service to help encourage cycling and details of grant funding and its allocation.
