Competition – Inspiring the Future: Attracting Young People to the Highways and Transport Technology Sector

Are you ready to make a difference?

We’re launching an exciting competition to discover the creative ideas that will inspire and attract young people to careers in the highways and transport technology sector.

Why this challenge matters

This sector plays a crucial role in shaping sustainable, efficient, and connected infrastructure, yet many young people remain unaware of the career opportunities it offers.

That’s where you come in

We need your big ideas to inspire the next generation and show them the potential opportunities available across the sector. Whether it’s a compelling campaign or an innovative initiative, we want to hear your solutions to this challenge!

Your challenge

Share your creative solutions, campaigns or initiatives, in a format of your choice, explaining why your approach would work and how it could make a positive impact.

Submission formats

You can use any medium to express your ideas, including:

  • Essay (maximum 4 sides of A4 / 3,200 words)
  • Video (maximum 10 minutes)
  • PowerPoint presentation (maximum 8 slides)
  • Process Flowchart
  • Campaign
  • Storyboard

Key Considerations:

Be creative and innovative in your approach.

Clearly explain your idea and how it would attract young people to the sector.

Highlight why you believe your idea would work.

Prizes for the Winning Entry

The winner will be rewarded with:

  • £1000 cash prize
  • Prestigious sector recognition at the DfT Special Recognition Apprentice Awards during the Innovation & Learning Festival
  • A place on the LCRIG Apprenticeship Task Group

Eligibility:

The nominee must be enrolled in, or have completed, an apprenticeship programme in highways or transport technology within the last 12 months.

DEADLINE EXTENDED: 5pm, Wednesday, 9th April 2025.

You can save and resume your entry as many times as needed until you’re ready to submit. Once submitted, you won’t be able to make further edits.

Please note that if shortlisted, you will be required to be at the awards presentation which will take place on the afternoon of 2nd July, ahead of the evening networking event. This relaxed and informal celebration will shine a spotlight on the incredible talent and growth driving the future of our sector.
