A new approach to ageing street lighting

As street lighting assets approach their end of life, could your authority rethink what it needs to illuminate? East Riding of Yorkshire Council is doing exactly that, with Clearview Intelligence contributing SolarLite active road studs to its award-winning ADEPT Live Labs 2 programme.

The approach in East Riding combines high-performance road markings and solar-powered road studs to reduce reliance on conventional street lighting in non-residential locations.

SolarLite collects and stores solar energy during daylight to power integrated LEDs after dark. These provide illuminated road-layout guidance without mains electricity or reliance on vehicle headlights needed for .

Crucially, decisions about removing lighting are supported by evidence. Thermal AI monitoring examines vehicle speeds, braking and road-user interactions, alongside whole-life carbon modelling and ecological monitoring. Together, these help authorities assess where lighting can be reduced while maintaining safety.

The wider programme reports more than 40% whole-life carbon reduction, reaching up to 64% at its highest-performing locations. These are results from the combined approach, with SolarLite forming part of the solution. East Riding is now taking the learning into everyday delivery through a three-year programme to remove around 2,500 lighting columns, with projected savings of approximately £6 million over ten years.

For councils facing ageing lighting assets and tighter budgets, the East Riding project offers practical learning on assessing alternatives before committing to like-for-like replacement.

Could your network benefit?

Clearview Intelligence and LCRIG’s SolarLite Local Authority Impact Challenge will provide three selected UK highway schemes with up to 100 SolarLite road studs each, including installation, free of charge.

Highway Authorities are invited to nominate locations where enhanced delineation could improve road safety after dark or help reduce street-lighting carbon and costs.

Perhaps you have a challenging junction approach or ageing lighting scheme?

Enter the Impact Challenge today and find out what SolarLite could achieve on your network.
