The Belmont Roundabout is located on a stretch of road known as the ‘Mad Mile’, where consistent flooding has continually blighted. The real danger this could cause motivated Surrey County Council to search for an effective drainage solution to solve the problem.
The inclination of the site meant that is was particularly prone to flooding due to rainfall flowing onto the roundabout. As well as the deluge of water, a large amount of silt would also gather at the low point of the roundabout.
Surrey County Council highways engineers started designing a high capacity road gully using bricks but realised this would create a time consuming, problematic installation.
They then turned to Saint-Gobain PAM and Stanton Bonna to work with them on a precast version.
This group of experts collaborat
ed by using their valuable knowledge and experience while using the latest technology, including 3D drawings, to produce the first prototype.
After a series of tests the result is now an innovative system that provides an effective solution to key highway rainwater management problems. Namely the precast concrete Super Gully.
The Super Gully is ideal for areas that experience large amounts of flooding or standing water. It is quick to install and provides a low maintenance solution that reduces the pressure on local authorities to perform preventative works by reducing the dangers of standing water and increasing the longevity of the asphalt surface.
Since the installation of the Super Gully, there has been some severe rainfall and no silt or water has gathered on the roundabout the flooding issues on this part of the road network are significantly reduced.
Following the success of Belmont Roundabout three Super Gullies were installed at Sandy Lane and Wonham Lane in Betchworth.
The location is a particularly sensitive area with grade one listed homes sitting on low lying ground prone to flooding. Over the years they have experienced severe flooding which has had a huge impact for the residents and worrying levels of degradation to the listed buildings.
The installati
on of the Super Gullies will enable the drainage system in that location to handle the surface water flooding problems that have been prevalent in the past .
Since these projects the Super Gully has been developed even further for a more efficient installation with slimmer kerb, split into more manageable sections as shown in the model opposite.
