Centurion Traffic Management has joined an industry-wide campaign to help tackle road worker abuse and vehicle incursions through shared intelligence.
The traffic management specialist has announced its support for the Roadworker Abuse and Incursion Shared Evidence (RAISE) programme, reinforcing its long-standing commitment to protecting frontline road workers and helping drive higher safety standards across the UK’s traffic management industry.
As one of the country’s leading traffic management providers, Centurion Traffic Management has joined organisations across the sector in supporting RAISE, a collaborative initiative established by the Traffic Management Contractors Association (TMCA) to create the UK’s first shared evidence base for incidents involving road worker abuse and vehicle incursions.
Every day, traffic management operatives work in live road traffic environments to protect motorists, pedestrians and workforces whilst enabling essential repair and infrastructure projects to be carried out safely. Yet verbal abuse, physical intimidation and dangerous vehicle incursions remain a far too frequent reality for many road workers, with incidents often going unreported or remaining handled within individual organisations.
RAISE has been established to change that.
The initiative encourages organisations to report incidents through a simple online process, enabling data that would previously have remained isolated within individual businesses to be combined into a single national evidence base. By sharing information across the industry, RAISE will develop a national incident heat map, identify geographical hotspots, reveal emerging trends and provide valuable insight into the circumstances surrounding incidents.
The initiative represents a significant step towards changing the industry’s approach to road worker safety. Rather than treating abuse and vehicle incursions as isolated incidents or an unavoidable aspect of the job, the collective data will help build a clearer understanding of where risks exist and provide the key evidence needed to support targeted safety campaigns, stakeholder engagement and future interventions.
National Highways has already highlighted the scale of the issue on the 4,500 miles of the UK’s motorways and major A-roads of the Strategic Road Network (SRN), with thousands of vehicle incursions occurring each year.
National Highways recorded 5,899 vehicle incursions during 2024/25 on just 2% of the UK’s road network.
If that rate were reflected across local authority roads, which constitute the remaining 98% of the entire road network, it could equate to almost 295,000 vehicle incursions every year which is approximately 819 incidents every day, 34 every hour, or one every two minutes.
By encouraging traffic management providers, contractors and local authorities to contribute their own data, RAISE aims to build a far more comprehensive picture across the wider UK road network, strengthening the industry’s ability to influence positive change.
Participation is free, with no minimum reporting requirements, enabling organisations of every size to contribute whenever incidents occur. Every report helps improve the quality of the data, strengthening the evidence base and ensuring the industry has a clearer understanding of the risks facing road workers.
