How do we make better, more informed decisions about when and where to invest in road maintenance?
It’s a question many local highway authorities are asking, yet practical guidance on road deterioration modelling remains limited. While the Carriageway Lifecycle Planning Toolkit developed through the Department for Transport’s Highway Maintenance Efficiency Programme provides a useful starting point, there is still a need for more practical guidance to help authorities consistently predict road deterioration and optimise maintenance investment across their networks.
With funding from the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund, TRL is undertaking a research project to develop a practical deterioration modelling toolkit for local highway authorities. The research aims to identify current approaches being used across the sector, understand the varying levels of maturity, and establish how deterioration modelling can better support evidence-based asset management and investment decisions.
The project will produce:
- A review of current and emerging deterioration modelling approaches.
- An assessment of the benefits and limitations of existing models.
- Practical guidance for local highway authorities.
- A roadmap to support the future development and adoption of deterioration modelling across the highways sector.
To ensure the guidance reflects real-world practice, TRL is asking local highway authority asset managers to complete a short survey. Your input will help shape guidance that benefits the entire sector and supports more effective use of increasingly limited maintenance budgets.
