Finishing off our Apprenticeship Task Group spotlights this National Apprenticeship Week, we’re pleased to introduce Christian Maude, Highway Steward at Cornwall Highways. Christian reflects on his journey into the industry through an apprenticeship, the support he received along the way, and how being part of the Task Group has boosted his confidence.
Q. What inspired you to choose an apprenticeship over another career or education pathway?
A. After spending several years at college studying A-Levels, as well as a diploma in Engineering, I was struggling to find a route into industry. Although in employment, I was unable to secure a job in the engineering industry. I was nervous about leaving my full-time role to begin an apprenticeship, especially with the added pressure of having a mortgage to pay, however, I haven’t looked back since. The apprenticeship route was brilliant and has allowed be to build on my academic qualifications, gain professional qualifications all alongside gaining valuable on the job experience.
Q. How do you manage balancing work responsibilities with training and study commitments?
A. I worked within three different teams and under three different line managers throughout my time as an apprentice. Everyone was always very supportive with providing cover on days when I was away, as well as supporting me with my workload to allow me to work on assignments and coursework as and when required.
Q. How has being part of the LCRIG Apprenticeship Task Group supported your personal and professional development?
A. Working with the task group has been a great way to boost my confidence as well as giving me an opportunity to learn from other members of the group. The group is made up of people from different organisations all over the UK so listening to and understanding other peoples’ experiences has been really valuable to my own development.
Q. What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship in the highways sector?
A. Take the opportunity and give it a go. There are so many different routes that you could progress down to suit your interests. There may also the opportunity to gain valued professional qualifications to progress your career even further.
