After last week’s ITS European Congress, I came back to the UK only to be greeted by an endless curtain of rain. Ah well – it’s good for the fields and local wildlife who were looking rather parched by the UK hot weather in the prior weeks.
But the contrast this week hasn’t just been about the weather. Last week, in View from the Top, I reflected on the many hats I wear – from policy specialist to innovation seeker to rapporteur. This week? It’s been much more down-to-earth but just as impactful.
First up: the inbox avalanche. Between policy support work and helping the team gear up for the 2025 LCRIG Innovation and Learning Festival, there’s been no shortage of action. And speaking of the festival – it’s shaping up to be bigger and better than ever, with registrations already flying in. Local Authority places are starting to become scarce, so don’t miss out!
One highlight was this week’s Innovation Board meeting, where we heard from an SME pitching their innovative products and seeking guidance. This board is a hive-mind of knowledge – led by Blackpool Council, known nationally for its innovative approaches, and joined by National Highways, DfT, Transport for London, Utilities representation with HAUC links, JAG, and councils such as North Yorkshire, Central Bedfordshire, and Reading – not to mention the AIA and RSTA.
What makes the board special? It’s the mix of experience and the safe, confidential space it offers. It’s a real incubator of ideas. Many of the businesses who’ve taken the board’s advice have not only grown but are now making waves across Europe and beyond.
Another great moment this week was catching up with Forbes Solicitors, who represent a wide swath of councils on litigation and insurance matters. Our conversation was a whirlwind tour through the latest tech trends – the hype, the myths, and most excitingly, the real AI work we’re leading in the sector. With the AI Task Group, we’re building the knowledge and tools that will help councils navigate this fast-moving space.

To round off the week, it’s been all about procurement. I’ve been working closely with councils on updating the TTF guidance, ensuring it remains useful and relevant. I also had a fantastic catch-up with Connie Hutchins from Crown Commercial Services – we covered everything from the IPS to broader procurement trends that are shaping the future.
So, while this week may not have had the international fanfare of the Congress, the themes of trust, innovation, and collaboration are still resonating – and they continue to guide everything we do.
