LCRIG Task Group Kick-Off Meetings Take Place

We are delighted to share an update on our newly launched Task Groups. This week marked the inaugural meetings of the first two LCRIG Task Groups, setting the stage for collaborative discussions and action.

As part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing member benefits, we have established dedicated Task Groups to address key themes and areas of interest within the sector. Following extensive consultations with our members, two initial groups have been formed: the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Task Group and the Apprenticeship Task Group.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Task Group

The AI Task Group will serve as a collaborative forum where members can share insights, explore AI applications, and discuss both the opportunities and challenges AI presents within the sector.

An expert panel, comprising leading industry experts, will lead on task and finish projects, sharing insights and knowledge with members.

The group will define a work programme and develop valuable outputs such as best practice guides, case studies, and thematic reports to support members in harnessing AI effectively.

You will hear more from Dan Cullern, Head of Sector Insights, at the upcoming quarterly drop-in session about how to get involved. If you haven’t registered yet, you can do so here.

We are also delighted to welcome the AI Task Group Chair, Sean Rooney, Head of Service – Highway Maintenance at Oxfordshire County Council, who has expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative:

“I am honoured to take on the role of Chair for the LCRIG AI Task Group. Leading this panel of experts, I am excited to embark on a forward programme of activities that will highlight the key AI-related themes most relevant to our LCRIG members across the sector. Our splendid AI expert panel, comprised of dedicated volunteers, will begin by addressing the fundamental question, ‘What is AI?’ From there, we will delve into its various applications and numerous potential benefits through a series of themed Task Group activities. This initiative aims to gather and share AI-related knowledge, identify and address Local Authority needs, and consider the challenges faced by the private sector.”

“Our goal is to deliver tangible outputs that genuinely support, inform, and facilitate AI adoption for the benefit of all concerned. The Task Group will be interactive, and we warmly invite you to join us on this exciting journey.”

Apprenticeship Task Group

The Apprenticeship Task Group will play a crucial role in shaping the LCRIG Innovation & Learning Festival 2025, ensuring it delivers meaningful content for apprentices. The group will help develop CPD sessions, live demonstrations, and workshops to make the event accessible and valuable for apprentices at all levels.

Additionally, this group will support and promote the DfT Special Recognition Apprentice Awards, celebrating emerging talent and fostering growth within the sector.

Apprenticeship Task Group Chair, Keely Metcalfe, Relationship Manager at LCRIG, expressed her excitement following the group’s first meeting:

“It was fantastic to meet with our group members during the first meeting. Their enthusiasm and passion for supporting apprentices in the sector was really inspiring, and I’m excited to see the ideas we’re developing take shape. Our group isn’t just about creating opportunities for apprentices, it’s also about supporting each other’s professional growth and strengthening our connections within the sector. By working together, we can expand our networks and build a strong foundation for our careers.”
