Bradford Council is delighted to have successfully completed an entire surfacing programme with reduced carbon emissions, thanks to the innovative use of Milepave™. The works, delivered in collaboration with Miles Macadam and Hanson Asphalt, were completed in the summer on Idlethorpe Way and Fagley Road. The project involved laying 13,249m² of Milepave™ on concrete roads, after the existing surface had suffered a significant amount of damage and potholing.
Milepave™ is an asphaltic grouted macadam ideal for these locations as it can withstand the damage typically associated with concrete roads, such as cracking and stone loss. The grout penetrates through the material to strengthen the surface and protect against water ingress. The material also has a lower carbon footprint than conventional surfacing products, using less resources, lower mixing temperatures, lower energy resources and a lower bitumen content. The scheme also used Hanson’s Reduced Emissions Asphalt which reduced the release of specific gasses, typically emitted during a road laying process, by 40%. This worked well to complement Bradford Clean Air Zone and ensure less disruption to residents.
The scheme had a saving of 161.6 tonnes in aggregates and 21.0 tonnes in bitumen. The use of Milepave™ with the Reduced Emissions Asphalt also had a similar effect on specific gasses as taking 147 cars off the road.
By using this process, the overall carbon footprint of the surfacing programme was reduced by over 40% compared to conventional surfacing materials.
