Hertfordshire County Council is brightening up Stevenage and Hitchin, with wind and solar street lighting trials

Following the successful introduction of two wind and solar lighting schemes on Corner View in Welham Green and another on Park Road in Rickmansworth, two additional sites are being trialled in Stevenage and Hitchin.

Installation of one unit on the cycleway in Jessop Road, Stevenage, and two units on the remote footpath in Friars Road, Weston, will support the county council’s ongoing mission to create a cleaner, greener, and healthier Hertfordshire, making active travel more accessible.

It’s hoped that the introduction of the new LED units will encourage more people to walk and cycle, especially in the evenings.

The wind and solar lighting units operate with both zero energy consumption and carbon emissions. They are silent in operation and will be working straight away following installation, which was completed on Wednesday 11 January 2023. The trial at these locations will run for around 12 months to see how the units perform over the four seasons (to account for variation in daylight / sun hours).
