JCB Pothole Pro, the revolutionary Pothole repairing machine which enables authorities and contactors to repair Potholes and highway defects faster, safer and deliver a permanent repair whilst drastically reducing carbon emissions.

JCB Pothole pro was designed from the ground up with a primary focus, to repair potholes permanently first time, whilst improving efficiency, safety and dramatically improving the quality of repair. JCB has grown to become one of the UK’s most respected manufacturing companies since it was established in 1945. As a privately-owned family business, it remains committed to manufacturing a broad range of innovative products in the UK, include the JCB PotholePro. The drive from JCB to create this innovation was to tackle the issues within the industry that we are all so familiar with.

In the UK a Pothole is reported every 46 seconds, in the period from 2015 over 200 cyclists were either killed or seriously injured due to potholes and defects in road surfaces across the UK. During 2020 councils spent a huge £93.6m repairing potholes across the UK, a lot of which had to be revisited within 12months as the repair carried out was substandard and failed. As a leading engineering business and manufacture we felt the responsibility to tackle this issues.

Features and benefits of innovation

Health and Safety – The JCB Pothole Pro can fully prepare a highway defect for reinstatement without a single highway’s operative having to stand in the carriageway, instead the operator operates the machine from the comfort and safety of the machine cabin. This is a huge safety benefit as it eliminates the risk of operatives being struck my live traffic, the machine also eliminates the need for use of hand tools, eliminating irreversible Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS).

Environmental- The JCB Pothole Pro is 3 machines in one, It cuts the highway defect removing the damaged material, crops the edge to allow for a nice clean edge for reinstatement, and cleans the area with the 1.2m built in brush. As this material can then be loaded into a trailer without contamination this allows it to be fully recycled as hardcore, or remixed to create new asphalt. The Pothole Pro negates the need to have additional sweepers and machine mounted breakers on site, significantly reducing machinery on site, therefore drastically reducing the carbon footprint. The Pothole Pro also contains the latest Stage V emissions technology, reducing emissions and idle time.

Economic- Customers who have invested in the JCB Pothole Pro have seen their average cost to repair a highway defect half. The machine can speed up to defect repair process by up to 10x! The JCB Pothole Pro allows our customers to plan exactly how much material they will use for reinstatement, eliminating waste.
The Pothole Pro is fully road legal and can travel up to 40kph carrying all of the required attachments, this negates the need for costly additional transport.

Efficiency- The JCB Pothole Pro also offers huge efficiency improvements. One customer who has chosen to invest in the machine has completed 3 years worth of work (traditional methods) in just 4 months using the Pothole Pro. This allows highways teams worldwide to fix highways defects quicker and permanently, allowing them to fix more in an allotted amount of time and clear the back log of highway defects.

With a machine designed specifically to tackle the issues faced by local authorities, our aim is to support their highways team and give them the tools necessary to maintain their network efficiency, safely and cost-effectively. Not only are we aiming to mechanise the processes with the Pothole Pro, but also up skill the network with free training included. The millions of pounds worth of investment and over 2-years worth of development, we have proven that the JCB Pothole Pro does exactly that. However, there is no need to take our word for it – speak to our customers who have seen dramatic transformations with the Pothole Pro.

Details of Local Authority network trial

JCB would use the funding to continue demonstrating and offering trials to councils, authorities and contactors up and down the UK. The Aim and objectives of conducting these trials is to demonstrate to councils, local authorities and contactors that there is machinery available which will not only save them time and money, but will make the process of repairing highways defects safer whilst reducing carbon emissions and delivering a permanent repair.
