View from the top: The sustainability question

The much awaited email from the highways maintenance team at the Department for Transport (DfT) landed earlier this week setting out the principles behind individual funding allocations and the incentive element questionnaire to be used for 2021/22. It is worth noting that DfT intend to rework the questionnaire during the course of this next year to expand its scope to address topics such as sustainability and decarbonisation which will help every local highway authority to understand the role it must play in meeting these global challenges.

If you have taken time to look at the 2021/22 questionnaire I’m sure you will be delighted to see the new questions on sustainability which will no doubt paint an interesting national picture about our individual approaches to reducing carbon.

I was delighted to see that DfT highlighted LCRIG as a channel to provide feedback on the new questionnaire that no doubt many of you are already reviewing. With this in mind I would really like to encourage you to engage either directly with DfT or through LCRIG to make sure your voice is heard to influence the topics addressed in the questionnaire from 2022 and beyond. Our first #AsktheDfT webinar in April will offer members an opportunity to put their questions to senior personnel directly.
