View from the top: Showcasing innovation

As you will already know a date of 28th April has been agreed for the first in a series of webinars about #AsktheDfT so make the most of this opportunity by suggesting questions about the self-assessment process in advance of the date to our Content Director, Alec – alec.peachey@lcrig.org.uk. We are really grateful to the DfT for stepping into this space and supporting these events which we expect to be really well attended.

On another note, I was amazed earlier this week when we put out a communication to our associate members asking a question about innovative products and services. We asked the members if any of them had any new innovations they would like to present to our Infrastructure Innovation Board chaired by Ian Large. We hoped that possibly three organisations might come forward. The response was overwhelming. In less than 24 hours circa 50 members wanted to put themselves forward to share their innovations with LCRIG. For me, this just shows the level of pent-up demand that exists for contractors to find appropriate routes to market for their products and services.

Whilst we were all delighted with the level of interest we now have to find a way of facilitating this access for our members.

So for every organisation that has put themselves forward we will invite them to present ‘Dragons Den’ style covering their innovation by answering the following questions;

  • What is it?
  • What issue does it solve?
  • Has it been trialled?
  • What are the costs?
  • What is your capacity?

The panel to whom they will initially present will include some members of the Infrastructure Innovation Board but as a minimum will include Ian Large (Chair of the Board), Will Britain (President of LCRIG) and myself.

We aim to see upwards of 50 innovations over the next few weeks by dedicating regular slots in our diaries and based on these initial sessions we are likely to invite some of the organisations to spend a little more time with all members of the Infrastructure Innovation Board at one of our scheduled meetings.

If your organisation has something unique that will help to solve an issue we face in highways maintenance then please put yourselves forward, we aim to provide a much needed gateway to connect highways maintenance solutions with clients.
