New Local Authority transport technology resource highlighted at Innovation Festival
Local authority delegates and their advisers attending the LCRIG Innovation Festival next week will be reminded of a huge new resource being available to them by the Department for Transport through the Transport Technology Forum which will help them maximise the effectiveness of technology to deliver new and improved services to users.
The Manual for Smart Streets (MfSS) is an interactive web resource delivering guidance to ensure local authorities understand the development, specification, procurement, and use of technology by road authorities.
It initially sets out twelve ‘use cases’ exploring how new and emerging technology can be used to realise transport policy aims, including advice on how traffic signals can be used to connect to vehicles into the future and how new sources of data can link into implementing other services in a local authority. It also provides guidance around cyber security implications of new technologies.
The Manual for Smart Streets is based on the success of the Manual for Streets which, in the 15 years since its publication, has become an essential document for anyone developing schemes on the local road network.
MfSS will be highlighted at the Innovation Festival by the DfT’s ITS Policy Lead Darren Capes, who has overseen its production by the Connected Places Catapult.
“The LCRIG Innovation Festival will welcome more than 175 local authority delegates from 70 authorities, making it the perfect place to promote the Manual for Smart Streets,” explained Kerry Winstanley of LCRIG, who is leading organisation of the festival. “We look forward to hearing how The Manual contains a series of use cases and resources addressing specific functional areas and shows authorities how to do things in a common way and make it easier and quicker for busy highways officials to maximise their use of technology.”
Presentations are now online from this year’s Transport Technology Forum Autumn Update, which took place on Tuesday 14 November 2023, at the IET Austin Court in Birmingham.
