LCRIG marks National Apprenticeship Week

With the theme for this year’s National Apprenticeship Week (7th-13th February 2022) ‘Build the Future’, the Local Council Roads Innovation Group (LCRIG) is working in partnership with the sector to deliver change in this area.

LCRIG is working on a platform which will provide co-ordinated access to sector relevant, affordable training to the highways sector, ensuring that the right training is delivered at the right time.

This will assist the industry to fill the skills gap at all levels and help to ensure the sector has a robust succession plan in place. By working at the heart of local authorities, there are three main areas where LCRIG can add value, address the issues with the current situation and differentiate LCRIG’s offering from other training providers. These will be split into three projects consisting of an LCRIG Training Platform, an LCRIG Accreditation Programme and a mechanism to influence future apprenticeship and training course content.

LCRIG Chief Executive Martin Duffy said: “We are in the process of building a platform which will help professionals working in the sector to access the right training that can help them do their jobs more effectively. As we mark National Apprenticeship Week it is important that the sector plays its part in ensuring that a younger and more diverse workforce is attracted to joining highways. Through initiatives such as our training platform we aim to highlight the range of exciting opportunities that are available in this sector. When thinking about this it is important to consider the journey to net zero that many of our members are on. This is something that excites the next generation of engineers and presents an opportunity to bring them into an industry where they can make a tangible difference to combating climate change.”

The group also provides a recruitment service where local councils can post jobs for free and all apprenticeship opportunities are advertised free of charge for all member companies.
