Discussion on safety inspections the focus of LCRIG’s next webinar

Members of the Local Council Roads Innovation Group (LCRIG) and the wider sector are invited to register for a webinar which will examine how councils can advance their safety inspections. 

The webinar entitled ‘Advancing safety inspections: the case for change‘ will take place next month (12 May) and is being delivered in association with Gaist. The event will examine the following:

  • Moving away from traditional approaches to highways safety inspections 
  • How to help highway inspectors through technological advances   
  • The importance of data when countering claims 
  • Reaping wider rewards through an innovative approach  
  • Why safety will always be key

The way in which roads are designed, maintained and inspected has stayed the same for many years. Many local authorities are facing an increasing squeeze on budgets and remain risk averse when it comes to trialing new ways of doing things.    

Safety though remains a number one priority for councils and they must regularly inspect the roads they’re responsible for by way of statutory obligation.  

The way in which these inspections are done can be time consuming, but they are vital for keeping roads safe and provide authorities with critical evidence necessary for defending against claims. 

Technology can play an important role in advancing how these inspections are carried out and help move the sector away from traditional approaches.  

Traditionalists will always argue that you cannot beat the human eye. But anything that can be done to help assist human making decisions should be welcomed. Whilst there is no silver bullet when it comes to highways safety inspections exploring the art of the possible is vital in order to keep making progress in this key area.  

Capturing data which highlights safety defects across inspection routes can support decisions made by safety inspectors and the benefits canbe even wider than this.   

The information can also be used to drive maintenance efficiencies which ultimately means councils can increase mobility, reduce congestion and reap the social, economic and environmental benefits of smooth, longer-lasting and safer roads.  

Finding the right technologies, processes and approaches will be key in helping the industry achieve this goal.     

The discussion – which is taking place at 11am on 12 May – will challenge councils to look holistically at their highways safety inspection regimes and consider making changes that could benefit the way in which they do things.
