UTMC Signal Design

With over 700 Traffic Signals installations in Lancashire, the Urban Traffic Management and Control (UTMC) team is a key team in ensuring the smooth operation of Lancashire’s Highway Network. The UTMC team is made up of 3 key sub teams each focusing on different elements of Traffic Signal Control seeking to maintain, improve and optimise existing installations as well as delivering new, innovative and efficient signal sites throughout Lancashire.

Job description

We are recruiting for an Assistant Engineer within the Traffic Signals Design Team, which is a small team of engineers working on a range of exciting and interesting projects introducing new signal junctions and crossings to the Lancashire Highway Network. The successful candidate will be heavily involved in the team’s activities and will play a key role in progressing projects through the design stage.

Person specification

The successful candidate will ideally have experience within the Traffic Signals industry but those with experience of a related discipline, such as highways design, are strongly encouraged to apply. The role requires a highly motivated, organised and professional candidate who will have a keen eye for design work including the preparation of their own designs as well as the checking of others works. The role is an exciting position for the right candidate to develop technical skills within the traffic signals industry, full support and training will be provided as needed.

The role requires the successful candidate to be heavily involved in the coordination and management of tasks involving third parties therefore it is essential the successful candidate is a confident communicator, can manage relationships with contractors and manages conflict. This will require good phone and email communication as well as the ability to represent the Traffic Signals team when attending site meetings with contractors.

The ideal candidate will have experience of preparing Risk Assessment and other Health & Safety documentation appropriate for a design service. The role will involve the preparation of traffic signal design documentation including TOPAS 2500 and MOVA datasets as well as undertaking FAT/SAT and junction validation work.

The post is a permanent full time position (37 hours per week). Normally the role is based out of County Hall, Preston however the team is currently working from home. The role is not solely ‘office based’ and the post holder will be required to attend site meetings and work flexibly to observe AM and PM peak periods.
