Wigan Council has been voted ‘Council of the Year’ at the 2019 LGC Awards and has recently published The Deal 2030, our ambitious plan for our borough. We are signed up to the Greater Manchester Continuous Service Commitment ensuring that your service will be continuous or ‘unbroken’ between the supporting organisations.
This exciting new role is part of the Network Management services. We play an integral role in managing and maintaining the borough’s highway infrastructure which has a value of £1.6bn. The highway infrastructure plays a key role in allowing residents, businesses, and visitors to travel safely around the borough and connect into the wider region.
If you have the passion and the skills required to maintain the safety of our highway network within a multidisciplinary team this job could be for you.
As an employer we like to thank our employees for their hard work and commitment by giving them the opportunity to access a range of exclusive rewards and benefits.
As a Highway Maintenance Apprentice, you will work within our key frontline teams in maintaining our footways, carriageways, and drainage systems. Through a combination of on the job and college training you will develop the skills, knowledge and principles around highway maintenance and assist Wigan Council in maintaining its reputation as an excellent authority.
Apprentices are expected to be reliable and manage their own time, ensuring they arrive to work/college on time and complete tasks to a high standard.
Our ideal candidates will be able to demonstrate the ability to work independently and as part of a team, with the ability to build and develop positive working relationships.
Candidates should be a Wigan Council resident, hold a strong sense of purpose, strive to give your best and can collaborate positively with our service teams and communities.
These are very practical, hands on roles and will suit someone eager to work on site and learn practically whilst developing a keen attention or detail and a specific skill set to become a qualified highway maintenance operative.
The health and wellbeing of our staff is of utmost importance to us and if you are required to work on the front line an appropriate risk assessment will be conducted and the appropriate safety measures put in place.
